A new World Bank report says that Africa’s farmers can potentially grow enough food to feed the continent and avert future food crises if countries remove cross-border restrictions on the food trade within the region.
World Bank Headquarters in Washington DC.

According to the Bank, the continent would also generate an extra USD20 billion in yearly earnings if African leaders can agree to dismantle trade barriers that blunt more regional dynamism.  The report was released on the eve of an African Union (AU) ministerial summit in Addis Ababa on agriculture and trade recently.
With as many as 19 million people living with the threat of hunger and malnutrition in West Africa’s Sahel region, the Bank report urges African leaders to improve trade so that food can move more freely between countries and from fertile areas to those where communities are suffering food shortages.
The World Bank expects demand for food in Africa to double by the year 2020 as people increasingly leave the countryside and move to the continent’s cities.
According to the new report―Africa Can Help Feed Africa: Removing barriers to regional trade in food staples ― rapid urbanization will challenge the ability of farmers to ship their cereals and other foods to consumers when the nearest trade market is just across a national border.
Countries south of the Sahara, for example, could significantly boost their food trade over the next several years to manage the deadly impact of worsening drought, rising food prices, rapid population growth, and volatile weather patterns.
With many African farmers effectively cut off from the high-yield seeds, and the affordable fertilizers and pesticides needed to expand their crop production, the continent has turned to foreign imports to meet its growing needs in staple foods.
“Africa has the ability to grow and deliver good quality food to put on the dinner tables of the continent’s families,” said Makhtar Diop, World Bank Vice President for Africa.
“However, this potential is not being realized because farmers face more trade barriers in getting their food to market than anywhere else in the world. Too often borders get in the way of getting food to homes and communities which are struggling with too little to eat.”
The new report suggests that if the continent’s leaders can embrace more dynamic inter-regional trade, Africa’s farmers, the majority of whom are women, could potentially meet the continent’s rising demand and benefit from a major growth opportunity.
It would also create more jobs in services such as distribution, while reducing poverty and cutting back on expensive food imports. Africa’s production of staple foods is worth at least USD50 billion a year.
Moreover, the new report notes that only five percent of all cereals imported by African countries come from other African countries while huge tracts of fertile land, around 400 million hectares, remain uncultivated and yields remain a fraction of those obtained by farmers elsewhere in the world.
In addition, Tanzania was cited as an example of the developing countries in Africa especially in the East Africa region which has the best agricultural policies such as Kilimo Kwanza which is aiming on boosting small scale farmers across the country.
Transport cartels are still common across Africa, and the incentives to invest in modern trucks and logistics are weak. The World Bank report suggests that countries in West Africa in particular could halve their transport costs within 10 years if they adopted policy reforms that spurred more competition within the region.

Samsung, the Korean electronic giant in the world, has vowed to continue expanding its presence in Africa with more ways that will make a positive impact to communities where the consumers live.

The Samsung Electronics Senior Manager East Africa, Simon Karithi, said on Thursday last week that his company was going to demonstrate this through the Samsung Week in Tanzania which starts from October 29 – November 3, this year.
“We understand that being successful in Africa requires an entrepreneurial attitude and a commitment to help create the market and infrastructure around it, not just enter it,” Karithi said.
Karithi said that that Samsung builds products and programmes for Africa’s unique needs, resources and conditions and that draw on the unique strengths and resourcefulness of its people to create new opportunities on the African continent.
He said that the week was aimed and dedicated to community development, entertainment and technology innovation where consumers have the opportunity to engage with the brand and their products and services at an experiential level.
In addition to the consumer experiential activities, Samsung plans to support the consumer community by offering free service and repairs of Samsung products like notebook PCs, cameras and mobile phones and raising awareness about dangers of counterfeit technologies.
“This is a very exciting initiative for Samsung as the company recently extended its standard factory warranty for customers on products within its visual display, IT solutions, digital appliances, digital imagining and digital air solutions product lines,” he said.
Karithi highlighted that the extension means that consumers can now enjoy a minimum 24 month warranty on all Samsung products, purchased from May 1, 2012, at no extra charge and that a Free Service Campaign allowed them to continue to demonstrate their commitment.
“Samsung is listening to the market, building partnerships and really committing to Africa and its people and this week along with the Free Service Campaign is just one example of how we achieve this,” he said.
Several activities have been planned for consumers to enjoy Samsung’s products available via special promotions and offers at all Samsung Shops, road shows with sales facility to bring the products closer to the people with entertainment, raffle draws with purchase of Samsung’s products and more.

THE Tanzania Portland Cement Company Ltd., (TPCC) popularly known as Twiga Cement early this week handed over thousands of Euros to three Tanzanians who emerged winners of Quarry Life Award Campaign that was conducted by the HeidelbergCement (HC) Group Ltd.

The winners wrote projects on how to boost mining ecology and biodiversityand submitted to the TPCC, the company which is a part of the HC group whose operations are in Tanzania

Speaking during the award giving ceremony held in Dar es Salaam, the National Environmental Council (NEMC) Director of Environmental Impact Assessment, IgnaceMchallo said it was highly commendable when companies take it upon themselves to comply and strive to continuously their environmental management plans.

“Restoration and rehabilitation is an ongoing process, and many benefits, such as improved biodiversity management can be realized. TPCC has an advantage in that it is in a city that is rapidly urbanizing, so this area in future may be one of the few ‘green areas’ left in Dar es Salaam region,” said Mchallo.

The first winner who pocketed 5,000 Euros was Leonard GastoryLugali, whose project was titled ‘Integrated Constructed Wetland for Wastewater Treatment, Nutrient Recovery and Quarry Re-naturalization’, while the second winner who went home with 3,000 Euros was David Maleko and EliyaMtupile whose project was titled ‘The potential of Leucaenaleucocephala Pioneer Trees and Cenchrusciliaris understory grass species in Soil Improvement and Forage Production at Wazo Hill Quarry’.
And the third one who was awarded 1,500 Euros wasKelvin Ngongolo and Samuel Mtoka from the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute, Kingupira Wildlife Research Centre whose project was titled ‘Can Revegetation of Wazo Hill Quarry Increase Butterfly Species Diversity and Abundance?’

TPCC Senior Environmental Officer, David Mwakalobo who was among the award coordinators said the campaign was an international competition to boost mining ecology and diversity for the students and researchers.

He said the competition was conducted in 18 countries in four continents where HC Group operates.
“At least 300 proposals were received in all those countries; 35 projects were received from Tanzanian universities, whereby other five projects came from outside universities,” said Mwakalobo.
He said there were criteria introduced for the projects and were used by jury members to rank and get top five projects.

Dr. Michael Rademacher, from HeidelbergCement, Germany said the campaign aimed to raise and create new ideas on how to rehabilitate the mining sites.

A perfect storm of reliability problems has dropped Ford to next to last among the 28 car brands ranked in Consumer Reports 2012 Annual Auto Reliability Survey, while its luxury brand, Lincoln, placed just a notch higher.

Only two years ago, Ford was Detroit’s poster child for reliability. It cracked the top 10 among brands in Consumer Reports predicted-reliability scores, with more than 90 percent of its models being average or better. This year the top seven spots are all held by Japanese brands.

Several factors contributed to Ford’s decline in Consumer Reports reliability rankings. A few new or redesigned models, including the Explorer, Fiesta, and Focus, came out of the gate with more problems than normal. Ford has also added the MyFord/MyLincoln Touch electronic infotainment system, which has been problematic so far, to many vehicles. In addition, three historically reliable models—the Ford Escape, Fusion and the Lincoln MKZ—are not included in the analysis; the three were redesigned for 2013 and CR doesn’t yet have reliability data on them.

Toyota, on the other hand, has excelled in Consumer Reports latest ratings. Its three brands—Scion, Toyota, and Lexus—swept the top spots. Toyota is clearly setting the pace in reliability. Of the 27 models in the brand’s lineup, 16 earned the highest rating. The subcompact Toyota Prius C earned Consumer Reports top score overall. The hatchback Prius, the larger Prius V, and the new Prius plug-in were also above average.

The Toyota trio was followed by four other Japanese makes: Mazda, Subaru, Honda, and Acura, in that order. All of the models produced by the top seven brands had average or better reliability. And of the 90 Japanese models reflected in Consumer Reports brand comparison, 86 were average or better, with 35 earning the highest rating.

Leading the Europeans, Audi had its best showing ever, moving up 18 spots to eighth place, making it easily the most reliable European make and the top non-Japanese brand.

The findings from Consumer Reports 2012 Annual Auto Survey are based on subscribers’ experiences with 1.2 million vehicles. The organization uses that extensive data to predict how well new cars that are currently on sale will hold up. For full reliability charts and predicted reliability on hundreds of 2012 models, plus a list of what's up and what's down, visit ConsumerReports.org.

Mixed bag for domestics

Cadillac CTS-V CoupeCadillac CTS-V CoupeCadillac is the top U.S. brand, having moved up 14 spots this year. Its CTS coupe was the most reliable domestic car. A number of other General Motors nameplates—Buick, Chevrolet, GMC—also moved up in the ranking. The Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric car continues to have above-average reliability, and the compact Chevrolet Cruze, dismal in its first year, improved to average.

Chrysler brands had a few setbacks. This year, Consumer Reports has enough data to report on some of the recently revamped Chrysler and Dodge models, and their problems have dragged the nameplates’ rankings down. The Dodge Charger, for example, returns with well-below-average reliability. Other models had ups and downs. The V6 version of the Chrysler 300 sedan, with an average rating, is now the brand’s most reliable model, and the V8 300 is its worst. Likewise, the V6 Jeep Grand Cherokee scores average and the V8 is now below par. The differences stem from the alternative powertrains and the extra features found in higher-priced versions.  Separating its trucks into a new nameplate, Ram, didn’t help Dodge’s standing. And Fiat’s 500 debuted with average reliability in its first year in the U.S.

Japanese models are tops

Mazda is hot on the tail of the three Toyota brands, and its improvement is buoyed by the predicted-reliability score for the new 2013 Mazda CX-5 SUV, which is much better than average. And Subaru’s standing improved, with its redesigned Impreza debuting with top marks and none of its models scoring below average. Honda dropped one spot in the ranking, to sixth place, but its worst vehicle, the Odyssey minivan, improved from below average to average.

Nissan and its Infiniti luxury brand performed well overall, but a few models kept them from ranking with the other Japanese nameplates. Nissan’s Versa sedan, redesigned for 2012, was much worse than average, as was the large Armada SUV. The Titan pickup truck was also below par. Of the seven Infiniti models, only the convertible version of the G scored below average.

Germans brands lead Europe

All of the German luxury brands improved. Six of the seven Audis in CR’s survey rated average or better, as did 10 of the 12 BMWs. But the high-end BMW 7 Series and the turbocharged six-cylinder version of the X3 SUV were much worse than average. Mercedes-Benz made a good showing, with the turbocharged, four-cylinder C250 sedan doing well in its first year and the V6 E-Class sedan moving from average to above average. But the redesigned M-Class came in below average in its first year.

Volkswagen was a mix. The redesigned Passat did well, and the CC, Eos, and diesel Jetta sedan improved. But the redesigned Beetle, four- and five-cylinder gasoline Jetta, sporty GTI, and Touareg SUV were below average. Volvo, which ranked highest among European brands last year, dropped 10 places, hurt by declining scores for the C30 hatchback and C70 convertible and a below-average showing for the aging XC90 SUV.

Consumer Reports reliability ratings do not come from the organization’s experience during vehicle testing. Instead, it relies on owners to supply the Consumer Reports National Research Center with the data. Earlier this year, the organization asked subscribers to report about serious problems they’ve had with their vehicles in the prior 12 months. CR bases its predicted-reliability scores on the most recent three model years of data, provided the model has not been redesigned for 2013. The scores are presented as a percentage better or worse than the average of all cars.

The minimum sample size is 100 vehicles, but Consumer Reports often gets many more. Among 2012 models, the Honda CR-V drew the most responses: 2,981. Other 2012 models with more than 2,000 responses are the Hyundai Elantra sedan and the four-cylinder Toyota Camry and Subaru Outback. Some new and redesigned models were released too late to be in our survey, and redesigned 2013 models are not included in the brand’s average reliability score.

Tanzania Portland Cement Company Ltd (TPCC Ltd) AWARDS THE top three project reports for the Quarry Life Award Campaign.
Dar es Salaam 29, Oct, 2012, THE HeidelbergCement (HC) group is the global market leader in aggregates and a prominent player in the fields of cement, concrete and other downstream activities, making it one of the world’s largest manufacturers of building materials. The company employs some 52,500 people at 2,500 locations in more than 40 countries

Tanzania Portland Cement Company (TPCC) popularly known as Twiga Cement is a part of the HC group whose operations are in Tanzania.

The Heidelberg Group has a long history in biodiversity management, and as a company, the group has adopted a global biodiversity policy, which has been translated into sustainability ambitions 2020. In line with this, Tanzania Portland Cement Company Ltd. (TPCC) launched a three year Public Private Partnership with GIZ focusing on restoration of its previously mined quarries. This commenced in October 2010 and is ongoing until 2013.

In 2011 the Heidelberg Group launched an international scientific and educational competition called the QUARRY LIFE AWARD (QLA). The main aim of this competition was: to boost mining ecology and biodiversity; to increase stakeholder awareness on the biological value of mining sites; and to increase collaboration with the surrounding and external community. The competition was open to students and researchers to propose projects related to biodiversity conservation, education and awareness in quarries.

TPCC launched the Tanzanian chapter of the QLA in January 2012. Over 30 project proposals were received from students and researchers from various institutes in Tanzania, and the top 5 project proposals were selected by the national jury members to proceed to the next stage to develop project reports. The competition came to a close on the 28th of September 2012, in which the top five project reports were evaluated again by national jury members based on the criteria developed by the group to select the top three reports. The top three finalists were selected and will be awarded cash prizes in Tanzanian shillings as follows:

·         Equivalent of 5000 Euros
·         Equivalent of 3,500 Euros
·         Equivalent of 1,500 Euros

The winners of the competition are:

1.      In first place: Leonard Gastory Lugali, whose project was titled
“Integrated Constructed Wetland for Wastewater Treatment, Nutrient Recovery and Quarry Re-naturalization”

2.      In second place: David Maleko and Eliya Mtupile whose project was titled:
“The potential of Leucaena leucocephala Pioneer Trees and Cenchrus ciliaris understory grass species in Soil Improvement and Forage Production at Wazo Hill Quarry

3.      In third place: Kelvin Ngongolo and Samuel Mtoka from the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute, Kingupira Wildlife Research Centre whose project was titled:
“Can Revegetation of Wazo Hill Quarry Increase Butterfly Species Diversity and Abundance?”

It is hoped that the second chapter of the Quarry Life Award competition will take place again in 2014, as TPCC and the Heidelberg Group strive to make make nature the biggest winner.

More information on the Quarry Life Award can be found on the QLA website: www.quarrylifeaward.com.
