National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has launched hotlines service across several of its branches in a bid to further provide exceptional banking services to its customers, the newly service will be used by the bank customers when visiting the branches across the country.

The launch was held at NBC’s flagship branch, Corporate Branch, situated along the corner of Azikiwe Street and Sokoine Drive in Dar es Salaam at the weekend.

Speaking during the official launching, NBC’s Chief Operating Officer, Maharage Chande said that the bank opens more rooms for its customers to enjoy the banking services offered by the NBC through its 52 branches countywide.
“We centre our customers on everything that we do and as such it is paramount that we offer exceptional service, in order to meet their expectations,”

“We know that our customers may sometimes have queries, which may need clarification and this initiative will provide them with an alternative to channel their queries,” he added.

The bank launched the initiative across 8 branches namely, Morogoro, Tunduma, Nyanza, Shinyanga, Mbeya, Karatu, Zanzibar and Corporate, with the aim to enhance customer service by collecting customer feedback.
Chande further noted that customers can use the Hotlines to provide suggestions and compliments, deliver complaints or have their queries answered, when visiting the branches.

He explained further that the lines are directly connected to the bank’s contact centre, where agents work round the clock to answer customer queries. All that the customer needs to do is just pick up the phone, and go through the options which will connect them to a customer service agent.

On her part, the NBC Head of Customer Experience Jane Dogani said “we highly value our customer’s feedback and as such we use every opportunity availed to us to collect more, so we work towards improving different areas which may need improvement so that we can meet our customer’s expectations,” she added.

However, she noted that the lines are not just for complaints and queries, if the customer visit one of their branches and receive great service, he or she can pick up the phone and let them know so that they can use that as a benchmark to provide even better service.

Not only that but the bank has several products in the Tanzanian market such as Islamic Banking services which started service in May 2010 and it currently offers Islamic savings, Islamic current, Islamic business and Islamic corporate accounts, which are interest free and comply with Shari'ah laws.

Government, World Bank, Donors Should Address Child Labor in Mines

Children as young as eight-years-old are working in Tanzanian small-scale gold mines, with grave risks to their health and even their lives, Human Rights Watch said in a report released recently.
The Tanzanian government should curb child labor in small-scale mining, including at informal, unlicensed mines, and the World Bank and donor countries should support these efforts.

The 96-page report, “Toxic Toil: Child Labor and Mercury Exposure in Tanzania’s Small-Scale Gold Mines,” describes how thousands of children work in licensed and unlicensed small-scale gold mines in Tanzania, Africa’s fourth-largest gold producer.

They dig and drill in deep, unstable pits, work underground for shifts of up to 24 hours, and transport and crush heavy bags of gold ore. 

The report said that children risk injury from pit collapses and accidents with tools, as well as long-term health damage from exposure to mercury, breathing dust, and carrying heavy loads. A 17-year-old boy who survived a pit accident told Human Rights Watch, “I thought I was dead, I was so frightened.”
“Tanzanian boys and girls are lured to the gold mines in the hopes of a better life, but find themselves stuck in a dead-end cycle of danger and despair,” said Janine Morna, children’s rights research fellow at Human Rights Watch. “Tanzania and donors need to get these children out of the mines and into school or vocational training.”
Many children who work in mining are orphans or other vulnerable children who lack basic necessities and support. 

Human Rights Watch also found that girls on and around mining sites face sexual harassment, including pressure to engage in sex work. Some girls become victims of commercial sexual exploitation and risk contracting HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.
Human Rights Watch visited 11 mining sites in Geita, Shinyanga, and Mbeya regions, and interviewed more than 200 people, including 61 children working in small-scale gold mining. 

The report explained further that the employment of children in dangerous mining work is one of the worst forms of child labor under international agreements, to which Tanzania is a party.

“On paper, Tanzania has strong laws prohibiting child labor in mining, but the government has done far too little to enforce them,” Morna said. “Labor inspectors need to visit both licensed and unlicensed mines regularly, and ensure employers face sanctions for using child labor.”

Child laborers, as well as children living near mining sites, are at serious risk of mercury poisoning. Mercury attacks the central nervous system and can cause lifelong disability to children, whose developing bodies are more easily affected by the heavy metal. 

The miners, including children, mix mercury with crushed ground ore and burn the resulting gold-mercury amalgam to release the gold, exposing them to poisonous mercury fumes. Even small children who are not working are often present during this process, which is sometimes carried out in the home. 

Most adult and child miners are unaware of these health risks. Health workers lack training and facilities and are not equipped to diagnose or treat mercury poisoning. Existing laws and initiatives on mercury have largely failed to reduce mercury use. 

Tanzania has helped craft a new global treaty to reduce mercury exposure worldwide, which more than 140 governments agreed upon in January 2013.

The Minamata Convention on Mercury, named for the site in Japan of a mercury poisoning disaster half a century ago, will be adopted in October near Minamata. 

“Tanzania helped bring about the Minamata Convention on Mercury,” Morna said. “Now, to protect the future of its own people and of its own growing mining industry, it needs to take the lead to protect its children – by monitoring, testing, and treating them for mercury exposure and getting them out of the mines.”
Working in the mines interferes with children’s education. Children working in mining sometimes skip classes or drop out of school altogether. 

Teachers told Human Rights Watch that school attendance and performance decreased when a gold mine opened nearby. In addition, many adolescents seek full-time employment, including in mining, because they lack access to secondary school or vocational training. 

A 15-year-old boy in the Geita district summed up the impact of mining on his life: “It is difficult to combine mining and school. I don’t get time to go through tutoring [which takes place on the weekends]. I wonder about the mine, it distracts me…. One day … I fell sick [after mining and missed classes]. I had pain all over my body.”
The Tanzanian government should expand access to secondary school and vocational training and improve child protection, Human Rights Watch said. 

The government and donors should provide financial and political backing for the new action plan on the most vulnerable children and include orphans from mining areas in the Tanzania Social Action Fund’s program of grants and conditional cash transfers to vulnerable populations. 

The World Bank and other donors to the mining sector should also support steps to end child labor in mining and reduce the exposure of children and adults to mercury, Human Rights Watch said. 

For example, they should help children transition from work in unlicensed mines to schooling, and ensure that newly licensed mines do not use child labor. A current USD55 million World Bank project to support the mining sector does not directly address child labor.

The gold industry has a responsibility to ensure it does not benefit directly or indirectly from unlawful child labor, Human Rights Watch said. Yet most gold traders Human Rights Watch interviewed in Tanzania had no procedures to keep gold mined by children out of their supply chains.

Small traders typically purchase gold directly at the mines or in mining towns and then sell it to larger traders in Tanzania. Sometimes the gold passes through several intermediaries before reaching the traders who export the gold. According to the Tanzanian government, small-scale miners produced about 1.6 tons of gold in 2012 – worth about USD85 million. 

The top destination for gold from Tanzanian small-scale mines is the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Gold is also exported to Switzerland, South Africa, China, and the United Kingdom. 

“Whether small or large, Tanzanian or global, businesses should avoid becoming entangled with unlawful child labor in their supply chain,” Morna said. “As those with the buying power, gold traders have leverage over their suppliers. They should use it to protect children and to protect consumers from buying gold tainted by child labor.”

Dar/Kampala. President Jakaya Kikwete and Rwanda’s Paul Kagame come face to face today in Uganda in their first encounter since the raging diplomatic wrangle between their countries began. They will converge in Kampala for an international conference on the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni will host the 7th Extraordinary Summit on security in Eastern DRC at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort. But Mr Kikwete and Mr Kagame are likely to steal the headlines at the conference with their encounter coming at a time when the stand-off is at its peak.
The tension between the two countries started in May and was triggered by President Kikwete’s appeal to Rwanda to engage FDRL rebels in talks. Mr Kikwete’s suggestion at a meeting of the Great Lakes countries, which met on the sidelines of the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, did not go down well with Mr Kagame and other top Rwandese officials. They link the FDRL with the 1994 genocide in which over 800,000 people were killed.
Significantly, too, the two leaders are meeting on the heels of a fresh row after Rwanda slapped a new transport charge on Tanzanian trucks. The rise of the road toll fee from $152 to $500 is seen as retaliation for the mass expulsion of thousands of Rwandese citizens from Kagera Region in an exercise to flush out illegal immigrants.
Mr Salva Rweyemamu, the director of communication at State House, confirmed yesterday that President Kikwete would travel to Uganda this morning. Uganda’s government-owned New Vision reported last evening that Mr Kagame was due in Kampala last night. Mr Rweyemamu said he would not speculate on Mr Kagame’s presence or his meeting with Mr Kikwete.
Last week, Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda said in Parliament that Mr Kikwete had asked President Museveni to play the role of mediator on the sour relations with Rwanda. Mr Pinda spoke after the Leader of the Official Opposition in Parliament, Mr Freeman Mbowe, demanded to know what steps the government was taking to normalise relations with Rwanda.
Mr Mbowe, who is also the Hai MP, claimed that Rwanda had convinced other EAC member states to sideline Tanzania. He pointed to recent tripartite meetings between Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda on infrastructure, immigration and political federation.
Mr Pinda, who said Rwanda had over-reacted, told Parliament that President Kikwete had reached out to Mr Museveni to ensure that matters did not deteriorate further. He added, however, that Tanzania does not believe it is being sidelined on EAC matters.
Efforts to establish whether President Museveni would reconcile the two leaders proved futile as members of the delegations kept their cards close to their chest. But University of Dar es Salaam political science lecturer Bashiru Ally said there was a likelihood that Mr Kikwete and Mr Kagame would use the opportunity to iron out their differences.
“It is important that they meet for the good of their nations and the EAC region at large,” Mr Ally said. “The two countries’ interests are intertwined, so let us hope they will come out of Uganda with good news.”
The DRC Summit was preceded by parallel meetings of regional ministers of defence and a regional inter-ministerial committee comprising ministers of foreign affairs from member states.
Members of the International Conference on Great Lakes Region include Tanzania, Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan and Zambia.

Qualification:
Holder of first degree/Advanced Diploma in Human Resources Management/Public Administration/Business Administration.
Working experience
Minimum of five (5) years working experience in similar field from reputable organization .

Baadhi ya wabunge wa upinzani nchini Kenya wameondoka bungeni wakati mjadala mkali ukiendelea kuhusu kuunga mkono au kupinga nchi hiyo kujiondoa kutoka katika mahakama ya kimataifa ya ICC.
 
Ukumbi wa Bunge la Kenya
Wabunge hao wameondoka bungeni baada ya kusema kuwa kamwe hawataungana na upande wa serikali kuunga mkono hoja hii ya kujiondoa kutoka katika mahakama ya ICC.Ni kutokana na kuwa kwamba upinzani una idadi ndogo zaidi ya wabunge bungeni.
Naibu kiranja wa wabunge walio wachache bungeni Jakoyo Midiwo, alisema kuwa wabunge wa upande wa serikali wanaotetea hoja hii ya kujondoa Hague watakuja kujuta. Mjadala huu unatokana na hatua ya Rais Uhuru Kenyatta na naibu wake William Ruto kukabiliwa na kesi za uhalifu dhidi ya binadamu katika mahakama hiyo wakati wa ghasia za baada ya uchaguzi mkuu mwaka 2007-2008 Hatua hii ya wabunge inakuja zaidi ya wiki moja kabla ya kuanza kwa kesi dhidi ya naibu Rais wa Kenya Williiam Ruto kuhusiana na ghasia za baada ya uchaguzi mwaka 2008. Ruto anakabiliwa na mashtaka ya uhalifu dhidi ya binadamu.

 Rais Uhuru Kenyatta pia anatarajiwa kufika katika mahakama hiyo mwezi Novemba kwa kesi dhidi yake. Wawili hao wanashtakiwa kwa kuhusika na ghasia za baada ya uchaguzi mwishoni mwa mwaka 2007. Msemaji wa ICC ameambia BBC kuwa kesi hiyo itaendelea hata ikiwa Kenya itajiondoa kwenye mkataba wa Roma uliopelekea kuanzishwa kwa mahakama hiyo.

 Bwana Fadi El Abdallah, alisema kuwa itachukua karibu mwaka mmoja kwa mchakato wa nchi yoyote ile kujiondoa kutoka katika mahakama ya ICC na hii bila shaka inaathiri tu kesi zilizokuwa mbele ya mahakama hiyo kwa wakati huo.

 Hii ni hatua ya dharura inayochukua serikali kujitoa katika Mkataba wa Roma wa mahakama hiyo ulioidhinishwa na Umoja wa mataifa mnamo tarehe 17 July, mwaka1998.

 Kenya inataka kutoa mfano wa kuwa nchi ya kwanza Afrika kuchukua hatua hiyo licha ya kwamba uamuzi huu hautoathiri kwa namna yoyote kesi zinazoendelea sasa katika mahakama ya ICC.

 Mahakama hiyo ya kimataifa imesema kwamba kesi hizo zitaendelea hata iwapo Kenya itajitoa. Imesema itaichukua Kenya kiasi ya mwaka mmoja kabla ya kukubaliwa ombi hilo la kutaka kujiondoa katika mkataba wa Roma na hilo litaathiri tu kesi zitakazozuka baada ya muda huo.

 Haya yanajiri wakati makamu wa rais William Ruto anatarajiwa kuondoka Kenya kueleka Hague Uholanzi wiki ijayo kukabiliwa na mashtaka ya uhalifu dhidi ya binadaamu katika mahakama hiyo ya ICC, kesi inayoanza tarehe 10 mwezi huu.

Wote wameshtakiwa kwa kuhusika katika ghasia zilizojiri baada ya uchaguzi mkuu wa mwaka 2007.Kesi dhidi ya rais Uhuru Kenyatta inatarajiwa kuanza tarehe 12 mwezi Novemba.
