Geneva, 21 November 2012– The members of the Master Jury of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture were announced today. The Jury, which independently selects the recipients of the US$ 1 million Award, will convene in January 2013 to select a shortlist from hundreds of nominated projects. The shortlisted projects will then be subject to rigorous on-site reviews by independent experts. The Jury will meet for a second time in June 2013 to examine the on-site reviews and then select the final recipients of the Award.

The Aga Khan Award for Architecture, established in 1977, is given every three years to projects that set new standards of excellence in architecture, urban and regional design, conservation and landscape architecture. Through its efforts, the Award seeks to identify and encourage building concepts that successfully address the needs and aspirations of societies in which Muslims have a significant presence. The selection process emphasizes architecture that not only provides for people's physical, social and economic needs, but that also stimulates and responds to their cultural and spiritual expectations. Particular attention is given to building schemes that use local resources and appropriate technology in an innovative way, and to projects likely to inspire similar efforts elsewhere. The Award is currently in its 12th triennial cycle.

The Aga Khan Award for Architecture is part of the Geneva-based Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), which has a wide range of activities aimed at the preservation and promotion of the material and spiritual heritage of Muslim societies. Its programmes include the Aga Khan Historic Cities Programme (HCP), which works to revitalise historic cities in the Muslim world, both culturally and socioeconomically. Over the last decade, it has been engaged in the rehabilitation of historic areas in Cairo, Kabul, Herat, Aleppo, Delhi, Zanzibar, Mostar, northern Pakistan, Timbuktu and Mopti. Undergraduate Scholarship
Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities. Preference will be given to students whose projects or programs are based at and organized by a German university. Scholarships are available either as part of an organized study abroad program or as part of an individual, student-designed study abroad semester or year.

Eligibility Requirements
Each year, an independent selection committee of academics and international education experts is assembled to select the Undergraduate Scholarship grantees. This committee is looking for students who:
  • are currently second and third year students and will be in their third and fourth year during their stay in Germany
  • are seeking DAAD support for a 4-10 month period in Germany during the German academic year.
  • possess outstanding academic records and personal integrity, as evinced by both their grades and letters of recommendation.
  • have well-defined study, research or internship plans for their stay in Germany.
  • submit the DAAD language evaluation form with their application, although German language competency is not mandatory.
  • demonstrate an interest in contemporary German and European affairs and who explain the significance of their project in Germany to their future studies, research or professional goals.
  • are enrolled, full-time students in an undergraduate degree-granting program at an accredited North American college or university.
  • will return to the US or Canada after the scholarship period to complete their Bachelor's degree.
Terms of Award

Scholarships may be granted for a minimum of four (one semester) and a maximum of 10 months (one academic year). Recipients will be awarded a monthly stipend of approximately € 650, plus additional funds to help defray travel and research expenses as well as health insurance.

Note: The scholarship periods must take place during the German academic year (anywhere from October 2013 through July 2014)

Submit all pages in one package (NO STAPLES, BINDERS, or FOLDERS) to the DAAD New York office. Be sure to submit all materials and the correct amount of copies of each. Do not staple or bind any part of your application! Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.

Please disregard the last page of the online application, entitled "Information regarding your application." The information relevant to your application includes supplemental documents listed below, as well as the instructions DAAD New York provides in the Online Application Guidelines and the Instructions for Completing the DAAD Online Application. FAQs
How much German do I need to know?
German language ability is not a requirement for this grant, however students should demonstrate language skills commensurate with their study and research needs. You must have the DAAD language certificate filled out, even if you don't speak any German yet. If you don't fit any of the categories listed, just have the instructor fill out the field for Sonstige Bemerkungen.

I am planning to take a language course before the German semester starts. Can the funding be extended to this class?
Not if the class is part of your Study Abroad Program, but if you are planning your own stay in Germany, DAAD has a limited amount of funding for language classes. This funding is available for students who will be in Germany for the academic year. Please state in your proposal that you would like to take a language class. Be aware that you may have to arrive in Germany in late August to participate.

I am applying for a study abroad program/exchange, but won't have official acceptance into the program until after the Undergraduate Scholarship program deadline. Can I still apply?
Yes, please include a letter from your study abroad office or the program you are applying to. The letter should certify that you are indeed applying for the respective program. It should be on letterhead and have an original signature. Once you receive acceptance into your study abroad program we will need an original letter for your file.

Do all copies of my transcript(s) have to be in sealed envelopes from my school's transcript office?
As stated in the application guidelines for most DAAD scholarship programs, applicants must submit multiple copies of their transcript(s). We recommend you request two official transcripts from your university. Open one and make copies of it, and submit the other one in the original sealed envelope. For letters of recommendation, please ask your referee to make copies, and include the original and photocopies in a sealed envelope.

Will I receive credit for the coursework or internship in Germany?
You will need to make the arrangements to receive credit yourself. In order to apply you have to show us that you are in principle eligible to receive credit from your home institution.

Will DAAD make housing arrangements for me?
No, DAAD scholarship holders find their own accommodation. Most German universities have dormitory space available and will assist with housing. DAAD can help to arrange for a one month-long stay with a German host family.

How do I design my own stay in Germany?
  • Start your preparations early!
  • Make sure that your home institution will give you credit for your study, internship or research project.
  • Get in touch with faculty members in Germany and find a mentor. If you have trouble finding a contact in Germany, speak to your academic advisors for suggestions. Your application will stand a much better chance of being approved if you can provide evidence of an established contact at your chosen German host institution.
  • If you do not have any contacts to help you find an internship, get in touch with the organizations listed below. These organizations may charge a fee.

My first language is French and I study at a French language university in Canada. Can I submit my application and recommendation letter in French?
Yes.

What advice can you give about the project proposal?
The project proposal is one of the most important documents to hand in. Make sure to carefully review it and have it reviewed by your advisers for content but also grammar and spelling. The essay gives you the opportunity to distinguish yourself from other applicants. A successful project proposal should clearly state why you are going to Germany and show the link to your academic work and career plans. Please do not hand in a life history, but address the following points: WHAT, WHERE, WHEN & HOW

Can I apply if I intend to go to Germany in September?
The Undergraduate Scholarship supports grantees for up to 10 months. Normally the grant period coincides with the German academic year starting in October. In a few cases it is possible to apply from September 1st (If you are on a study abroad program from September through December or from September through June, for example.)

Can I apply for study or research periods shorter than four months?
No.

Is it possible for a First-Year-Student to apply? No, students in their first or Freshman year are not eligible to apply for the Undergraduate Scholarship.


When do I apply if I am planning to go to Germany between January and April 2013?
Even if you are going to Germany in early 2013, you have to meet our January 31, 2012 deadline. If you do not have acceptance into a study abroad program yet, please let your adviser certify that you have or intend to apply. If you are designing your own research or study abroad, make sure that you are in touch with your mentor early on, so you can obtain an invitation to Germany.

I am planning to go to Germany in the summer of 2012. Am I eligible to apply?
If you are spending only the summer of 2013 (e.g. from May to July) you are not eligible for Undergraduate Scholarship funding; you should have applied last year. However, if you are planning to stay in Germany from the summer through December 2013, you may apply for Undergraduate Scholarship funding from September through December.

Advice on recommendation letters:
The recommendation letters should be by professors, not teaching assistants. If you have not been taught by professors and your letters are by assistants, make sure a professor co-signs the letters. The letters should be by professors in your major fields of study (not necessarily a German professor). Letters by high school teachers or employers will not be accepted.

How should I hand in several copies of the recommendation letters?
DAAD needs to receive one original of each document and three copies. The same is true for recommendation letters: Please ask the faculty members who are writing recommendation letters to include three copies for us.

How can I make sure you receive the recommendation letters on time?
You can include the sealed recommendation letters with the rest of your application. If any of your professors want to send them directly please include a list of the recommenders with your application, so we know whose letters still to expect.

Do all copies of my transcript have to be in sealed envelopes from my school's transcript office?
Applicants must submit four copies of their transcript, including at least one sealed, official transcript. We recommend you request two official transcripts from your university. Open one and make copies of it, and submit the other one in the original sealed envelope.

My university does not have a Study Abroad office. Who should sign the letter of support and credit eligibility form?
In this case you should ask your undergraduate academic advisor. Make sure to list a specific advisor with their individual contact information.

What are the odds of me receiving a DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship?
The success rate of our applicant pool has been anywhere from just below 20% up to 30% in the past few years. We cannot make any predictions as to how many applicants we will have in a given year.

Highly qualified graduating seniors (fourth or final year of undergraduate students in Canada) or those who have received an undergraduate degree of all disciplines may apply for the DAAD Study Scholarship for a year of independent study or a full master's degree program at a German university. Eligibility Requirements
    • Graduating seniors (fourth-year students in Canada), graduate students and recent graduates who have completed their Bachelor's degrees no longer than six years before the application deadline are welcome to apply. Students who are in the first year of a full Master's degree program in Germany may also apply to fund their second year of the Master's programs.

    • Applicants in all academic fields are welcome to apply. For study in the fields of dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, or veterinary medicine, contact DAAD.

    • If you are a graduating senior (last year of undergraduate studies) or a graduate student, you must be enrolled at an accredited North American university at the time of application. (Those who have already completed an undergraduate degree do not need to be currently enrolled.)

    • Recent graduates should have received their bachelor's degrees no longer than six years before the application deadline.

    • Recent graduates who are currently in Germany (for no longer than one year at the time of application) are also eligible to apply.

    • Applicants should be US or Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Foreign nationals are eligible if they have been full-time students at an accredited US or Canadian University for at least two years at the time of application.

    • At the time of application, applicants may not be living in Germany for a period of more than one year.

    • Applicants for Master's programs should have a study proposal explaining why a particular program has been chosen and how it will further the applicant's educational and career goals. As German university deadlines are later than our deadline, you may not have yet been admitted to a German university; however, if already enrolled in Germany and applying for the second year of the Master’s, applicants must submit evidence of admission to a German university. Those beginning their Master’s do not need to submit any evidence of contact with a German institution.

      Applicants for independent study are expected to have a well-defined study or research project that makes a stay in Germany essential and should have an invitation from an academic partner at a German university or research institution. Scholarship recipients are required to complete two courses per semester and obtain "Scheine" (certificates of credit) for them.

    • Applicants in the arts, humanities and social sciences should have a good command of German.

    • Applicants may not hold a DAAD grant and a grant from another German or German-American organization/German-Canadian organization concurrently for the same project. Prior recipients of a DAAD grant should contact DAAD New York before applying to determine their eligibility status.
Application Deadline  
    • November 1, 2012 (postmark): for all applicants in the fields of music, visual arts and performing arts who wish to study during the upcoming German academic year (October 1, 2013 to July 31, 2014). Results will be announced at the end of March/beginning of April.

  • November 15, 2012 (postmark): for applicants (outside the fields of music, visual arts and performing arts) who wish to study during the upcoming German academic year (October 1, 2013 to July 31, 2014). Results will be announced at the end of March/beginning of April.
Terms of Award  
    • Graduate study scholarships are granted for one academic year (10 months) with the possibility of a one-year extension for students completing a full degree program in Germany.

    • Scholarships must take place during the German academic year (October 1, 2013 to July 31, 2014).

    • A very limited number of scholarship holders who receive seven- to 24-month grants may be awarded a two-month language course grant. This language grant is decided upon by the independent selection committee and does not require a separate application

    • Monthly stipends are approximately €750. DAAD will cover health insurance and provide a flat rate subsidy for travel costs (US East: € 850 / West: €1,075; Canada East: €925 / West: €1,300). In addition, limited funds are available for a rent subsidy and family allowance.

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH PART OF THE APPLICATION:

1) Application Form - Fill out the online application form. Please answer all questions on the form completely. Do not fill in any blanks with the phrase "see attached," even if you must refer to additional material. Do not forget to sign the printout of your application.

2) Supplementary Materials - Applicants in the field of music must submit supplementary application materials (see Study Scholarship for Artists and Musicians)

3) Curriculum vitae or résumé - in chronological/tabular form. Narrative/paragraph-form CVs are not acceptable. Your name should appear on each page.
 
4) Study Proposal - You may apply for funding for a Master's program OR a period of independent study.

Applicants for Master's programs should have a study proposal explaining why a particular program has been chosen and how it will further the applicant's educational and career goals. The proposal should be no more than two pages in length, double spaced. Your name should appear on each page.

Applicants for independent study are expected to have a well-defined study or research project that makes a stay in Germany essential and should have an invitation from an academic partner at a German university or research institution. The proposal (excluding references) should be no more than five pages in length, double spaced. Your name should appear on each page. Scholarship recipients are required to complete two courses per semester and obtain "Scheine" (certificates of credit) for them.
5) Letter of Recommendation - Submit two original letters of recommendation printed on university letterhead, from professors at North American institutions in your field of study. Referees have the option of using the recommendation form available at www.daad.de/medien/deutschland/stipendien/formulare/recommendation.pdf (referred to as “Reports on scholarship applications”) though it is not mandatory. The form gives a general outline of the points that selection committees expect to find in a recommendation. Recommendations must include an original signature, and enclosed in a sealed envelope. You should submit these with your application package; if your referee prefers not to give them to you or you do not receive them by the deadline date, you may have them sent to the DAAD New York office directly.  In some circumstances we would accept faxed letters.

6) Evidence of Contact with a German Institution - E-mails can be accepted as evidence of contact.

Applicants for Master's programs: As German university deadlines are later than our deadline, you may not have yet been admitted to a German university; however, if already enrolled in Germany and applying for the second year of the Master’s, applicants must submit evidence of admission to a German university. Those beginning their Master’s do not need to submit any evidence of contact with a German institution.

Applicants for independent study: Your application will be greatly advantaged if you can provide evidence of any existing contact, or attempt at establishing contact, with academics at your chosen German host institution. It is not necessary to translate the letters of invitation from German faculty.

7) DAAD language evaluation form (Sprachzeugnis) (click here to download) - Applicants with any knowledge of German must submit this document. The document should be signed by a faculty member of the German Department at your institution. If you have no knowledge of German and your research/study language in Germany is in English, be sure to submit this certificate anyway, indicating that your research/study language is in English, and write at the top "No knowledge of German." We cannot accept Fulbright forms nor can we accept evaluations from teaching assistants.

8) Transcripts - Submit official transcripts of all post-secondary studies, including explanations of the grading systems. You may submit one official copy and three photocopies of each transcript.

DAAD offers a wide range of funding opportunities for individuals and institutions in higher education.  Since DAAD New York is the representative office for all of North America, its programs are open to students, faculty, administrators, and staff of higher education institutions geographically located in the United States, Canada and their territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, etc).  There are a few special programs that may extend to constituencies beyond that.

Scholarship Program 1


Who can apply?
For the scholarship programme 1 of KAAD you can apply if you:
  • come from a developing or emerging country in Africa, Asia, the Middle East or Latin America
  • have a university degree and professional experience from your home country
  • want to acquire a master's degree or a PhD at a German university or do a post-doctoral research project (2-6 months for established university lecturers) at a German university
  • are a Catholic Christian (or general belong to a Christian denomination). Candidates from other religions can apply if they are proposed by Catholic partners and can prove their commitment to interreligious dialogue
  • possess German language skills before starting the studies (KAAD can provide a language course of max. 6 months in Germany).
What does KAAD expect from you?
  • Above-average performance in studies and research
  • The orientation of your studies or research towards permanent reintegration in your home region (otherwise the scholarship is turned into a loan),
  • Religious and social commitment (activities) and willingness to inter-religious dialogue.
KAAD is working with focus- and partner countries in your region. There are so-called Partner Committees in these countries and applications are channelled via them. Applications from other countries can be considered only in exceptional cases.

Applicants shall have a Master’s Degree or corresponding in Computer 
Science, Computer Engineering, or in a related discipline. A genuine 
interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical 
and communication skills, orally as well as literally, are needed.

The employment is expected to start early 2013 (deviations are 
negotiable). As a Ph.D. student you are employed by Chalmers and will 
receive a salary according to current salary agreements (starting salary 
at present: approx. 25000SEK before taxes). A maximum of 20% of your 
time will be devoted to other duties at the department, mainly teaching. 
The remaining time will be devoted to your own courses and research 
within the project and you are expected to obtain a Ph.D. within a 
maximum of 5 years. You may apply even though you might not have 
completed your degree yet, but expect to do so before the position 
starts.

Knowledge of Swedish is not a prerequisite for application. English is 
our working language for research and education at Master level. Both 
Swedish and English are used in undergraduate courses. Half of our
