For months Microsoft has been describing Windows 10 “as a service”  and
now we know why. Microsoft is going to introduce a monthly subscription
fee for Windows 10 usage…

That cost will be $7 per user per month but the good news is it only
applies to enterprises, for now. The new pricing tier will be called
“Windows 10 Enterprise E3” and it means Windows has finally joined Office
365 and Azure as a subscription service.

Of course the big question is now: How does this new subscription pricing
affect the millions of consumers who upgraded to Windows 10 on the promise
of it being free?

The good news is Microsoft has gone on record to say it is not being
passed down to consumers at this stage: “This new subscription model is
not associated with our current upgrade offering or applicable to the
Windows 10 consumer edition,” a Microsoft spokesperson told PC World.

Could Microsoft eventually introduce Windows 10 monthly subscriptions for
consumers? Without doubt, but I would be highly sceptical they would apply
to anyone who has already upgraded. That said there is likely to be a
threshold in future where Microsoft will draw a line in the sand for the
ongoing addition of new features without a fee.

The Rwandan capital Kigali was a hive of activity this week as the city hosted the World Economic Forum on Africa.
The land of a thousand hills is shaking off its negative image as a country forever linked with the 1994 genocide, in which an estimated 800,000 people were killed.
It is breaking old stereotypes not just about itself but also as an African nation.

The technology and innovation projects dotted all around this city are generating a new, positive narrative, led by a new generation of young entrepreneurs, bursting with great ideas.

In the Kigali suburb of Gikondo, I caught the number 205 bus for the city centre, paying the fare with a quick tap of my pre-paid smart card.

Commuters along the route boarded the bus quickly and easily, taking advantage of the new cashless payment system.

There were no delays or arguments about change, the kind you are almost guaranteed to encounter when taking public transport in many other African cities.

The modern bus was fitted with a TV at the front, which played out music videos for those not already texting or making calls on their mobiles.

On the outskirts of Kigali, I visit the assembly plant for a Latin American computer company, another example of the country's technological progress and attractiveness to foreign investors.


As I walk into Positivo GBH in Kigali's Gasabo neighbourhood, I see a clean white factory floor, a laboratory-like space measuring 3,000 sq ft.Young Rwandans are working on the assembly line building computers.I ask the Juan Ignacio Ponelli, the Argentinean involved in the decision to establish the company's first African office here: "Why Rwanda?""Why not?" he replies, with a confident smile."We had been talking to different African countries but I have to say Rwanda moved fast. They have a strong anti-corruption drive and the country has been growing at about 8% per annum for the last few years.
Back in the centre of Kigali, I visit FabLab, an innovation hub at the government-backed Information and Communication Technology (ICT) park, which is expected to receive $150m (£105m) of investment.

 There I met young tech entrepreneurs working on 3D and laser printers.
Amongst them a familiar face is being shown around the room. Tony Blair, the former UK Prime Minister and the patron of the Africa Governance Initiative.

"What they are doing here is not just incubating technology firms but seeing how the latest developments in technology can help revolutionise the rest of the economy," he tells me.
Shikama Dioscore, the founder and CEO of Go Ltd, a mobile app development company, shares the former UK leader's optimism:

"We are excited about empowering the youth, especially in technology," he says.
But it's not all smooth sailing. One of the key challenges is the country's low internet penetration.
According to the most recent figures, 13% of Rwandans are online. But the government has published ambitious plans to increase that to 95% by the end of 2016, with the planned rollout of a 4G mobile network.

As Anne Jellema, chief executive of the Web Foundation, which is working to extend the "basic right" of connectivity to people across the world, tells me:
"Everyone deserves to be connected to fast, affordable, safe and transparent Internet. Nowhere is this need more urgent that it is here in Africa, where four in five people remain offline today."

Microsoft Middle East and Africa plans to come with the strong antivirus protection, programs, training and windows suitable for Africa with purpose of fostering social interaction and improving Africa’s competitiveness in the global market.

Speaking to East African Business Week last week in Dar es Salaam, Director, Product Marketing Application Platform Middle East & Africa, Aydin Gencler said that Microsoft is on the mission to address Africa‘s IT skills shortage through its employee volunteer programme My Skills 4Africa which was launched in February this year.

He said the programme is designed to enable Microsoft’s global employees – both technical and non-technical – to contribute to improving Africa’s competitiveness.

“We designed the program in line with the company’s heritage of giving back to the communities in which we operate, and in order to advance the overall goals of the 4Afrika Initiative around accelerating innovation, world-class skills and affordable access for Africans,” said Gencler.

Gencler added that the programme is a response to the consistent concern from partners about a real skills gap in Africa due to the lack of enough people to hire with the skills needed to meet 21st century business demands including not just ICT skills but also sales, marketing as well as leadership skills in office management.

He further said that it aims to train 200,000 Africans by 2016, with 100,000 coming from the existing workforce which is largely made up of Microsoft’s partner community while the remaining 100,000 will consist of recent graduates, 75% of who will be helped in terms of jobs placement via partners.

“We will make sure also that we work closer with the universities in Africa by creating suitable programs, products and solution with minimum cost and affordable with aims of creating more jobs for young graduates in Africa,”
“While 4Afrika is definitely about helping Africa grow, it is not about charity. This is a business strategy for Microsoft’s own growth on the continent as well,”  
“We believe deeply that helping Africa accelerate economic development and create jobs will help Microsoft achieve our company’s mission in Africa. 

MySkills4Afrika is about developing Africa’s business climate to enable people to compete and reach their full potential,” stated Gencler, adding that the skills focus is squarely on entrepreneurship and employability, and subsequently helping Africans find and create jobs.

He noted that the first batch of about 50 volunteers from 17 countries around the world embarked on the programme in early February after a pilot conducted in 2013 by 49 volunteers. During the pilot, about 667 partners benefited, with the beneficiaries being drawn from Microsoft partners, innovation hubs and NGOs.

One of the beneficiary innovation hubs is Kenya’s iHub, which has since February 2013 received most volunteers, both technical and non-technical under the initiative.

“In my opinion, MySkills4Afrika is the best part of the 4Afrika initiative as it is a value adds in building talent pool. While the focus remains tech startups and individuals, ironically the kind of people also attending the volunteer trainings at the iHub are non-tech people,” said Senior Product Marketing Manager Windows Microsoft Middle East &Africa, Onur Gorur.
Gorur said that the partnership with iHub is part of the strategic cooperation agreements signed between Microsoft 4Afrika with three incubator organizations across the African continent to enable startups, innovators and Africa’s developer community to grow their skills and build businesses with Microsoft technologies.

He added that the fundamental change going forward is looking at initiatives to meet a local need, solved by local people by also introducing new product such as SQL server fast growing product that allows developing data, store, report data and business intelligence for Africa.

Gorur noted that the 4Afrika initiative is endorsed by Microsoft in the US, so they have their full support to ensure that Africa is growing fast in the ICT skill in the world
“In Africa, 44% of the youth are younger than 15-years-old. Small and Medium Enterprises are at a level of growth and innovation is all about how we do things, do business and how we deal with our challenges,’
“Skills development is something that we need to develop and provide access to.

 If we address skills development, it will address all the factors that will make Africa even better. In the world, 16 out of the 30 fastest growing economies are in Africa, and technology and the growth thereof has a large part to play in it,” he noted.

According to him, Microsoft is looking forward to continue investing in Africa especially in Small Medium Enterprises (SME) due to the fact the total global market share six percent in from the SME.

As you’re reading this post on facebook, you must be aware that to log into Facebook you need an email account. But have you ever wondered about the origins of email?

 
Email turned 32 yesterday. But how many of us know that, VA Shiva Ayyadurai an Indian-American scientist invented Email when he was just 14.

Ayyadurai was born to a Tamil Family in Bombay. At the age of seven, he left with his family to live in the US. In 1978, aged 14, he developed a full-scale emulation of the interoffice mail system which he called "E-mail". It replicated all the functions of the interoffice mail system: Inbox, Outbox, Folders, Memo,

Attachments, Address Book, etc. These features are now familiar parts of every email system.
Studying at Livingston High School in New Jersey, Ayyadurai began his work on the email system for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He closely observed that the desktop of each secretary, in addition to the typewriter, had an Inbox, Outbox, Drafts, Carbon Copy Paper, Folders, Address Book, Paper Clips (for attachments), etc, which they used each day to create and process incoming and outgoing mail.

Then he conceived an electronic version of this system. He created a computer programme of over 50,000 lines of code, which electronically replicated all the features of the interoffice mail system.

On August 30, 1982, the US government officially recognized Ayyadurai as the inventor of email by awarding him the first US Copyright for Email for his 1978 invention.

Yet his name is nowhere in modern history of computer science. Whoever claims the invention, Ayyadurai will remain the father of E-mail. We hope he gets the name in history he deserves.

Wiki moja kabla ya kusitishwa huduma za programu ya kompyuta (OS) ya Windows Xp, imefahamika kuwa waathirika wakubwa watakuwa ni benki na taasisi za fedha ambazo hutumia mfumo huo katika mashine za kutolea fedha (ATMs) Shirika la Microsoft limethibitisha kuwa benki ni miongoni mwa taasisi nyingi zitakazoathirika na mabadiliko hayo.
Mfano wa Windows XP

Baadhi zimeanza kufanyia kazi tatizo hilo, ikiwamo benki moja ambayo jana alasiri ilituma ujumbe kwa wateja wake kuwa, “Ndugu mteja, kuanzia Jumamosi saa 2:00 usiku Aprili 5, mpaka Jumapili saa 12:00 asubuhi tutakuwa tunaboresha mashine zetu za ATM, hivyo kadi yako haitafanya kazi kwa kipindi hiki. Asante.”

Kwa mujibu wa Microsoft asilimia kubwa ya benki katika nchi zinazoendelea zinatumia programu ya Windows XP katika kuendesha ATM, hivyo kuwa moja ya waathirika wa mpango huo.

Katikati ya Machi, Microsoft ilitangaza kusitisha huduma zote zinazohusiana na bidhaa zake za Windows Xp kufikia Aprili 8, mwaka huu. Pia shirika hilo litasitisha ufanisi wa programu ya kuzuia na kupambana na virusi ya Microsft Security Essentials katika mfumo wa Windows Xp, hivyo kufanya urahisi wa kompyuta zinazoitumia kukosa ulinzi.

Mkurugenzi wa Kampuni ya Twiga Hosting, Jacob Urassa alisema Watanzania hawatakiwi kupuuza onyo hilo kwa kuwa ikifika Aprili 9 usalama wa taarifa zao utakuwa hatarini.

“Windows XP ni dhaifu mara tano zaidi ya Windows 7 na 8, kwa hiyo Microsoft wameona ni bora wakaitoa sokoni. Kwa maana hiyo ATM na kompyuta zote zinazotumia programu hizo hazitakuwa na ulinzi wa uhakika,” alisema Urassa ambaye ni mtaalamu wa masuala ya Teknolojia ya Mawasiliano (IT).

Alisema kuwa kuna idadi kubwa sana ya Watanzania wanaoendelea kutumia bidhaa hizo zikiwemo taasisi kubwa nchini hivyo kuna haja kubwa ya kuchukua hatua za kubadilika na teknolojia.

Naye, Ofisa Uhusiano wa Benki ya Posta, Noves Moses aliwatoa wasiwasi wateja wake kuwa licha ya kusitishwa kwa matumizi ya Windows XP, bado benki hiyo itaendelea kutoa huduma zenye kiwango kile kile.
