Greetings from TMF!
Since liberalisation in the 1990s, the media sector
in Tanzania has grown to include a wide range of actors and diverse interests.
As the legal, political, economic and cultural landscape of the country has
changed so have media production and consumption patterns.
Technological
advances have also had a significant impact on how people search for,
access
and share information. And recently, the president signed the Media
Services Act (2016), which to some extent embodies the tensions
at work in the media landscape of Tanzania.
In this dynamic context, what is
the role of editors in promoting professionalism and editorial independence in
the media in Tanzania? What does the future of journalism look like and how can
the media effectively play its three-fold role of watch dog, agenda-setter and gate-keeper?
