Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) conserves wildlife and ecosystems in protected areas and outstanding wild places. FZS maintains long-term conservation programmes in Africa, South America, Asia and Europe. The Africa Programme is the Society’s largest and oldest and works with partners in five focal countries: Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Posit: Project Leader
Location: FZS office at Serengeti National Park (SENAPA) HQ, Seronera, Tanzania.
Purpose: Ensure overall coordination of FZS activities within Serengeti National Park
Serengeti National Park forms the core area of the Serengeti Ecosystem. At 14,763 km2, it comprises nearly half of the entire ecosystem.  FZS has been involved in the Serengeti for over 60 years and is the longest serving NGO in the ecosystem.  In order for FZS to manage its diverse Serengeti intervention portfolio effectively, it has become necessary to establish a Project Leader position responsible for coordinating the activities of the Society, and in particular the Serengeti Rhino Repatriation Project and the implementation of the Serengeti Security Plan.
Technical Responsibilities:

  • Working with TANAPA (Tanzania National Parks) management to implement the park security plan.
  • Ensuring a suitable monitoring plan is developed and implemented for the rhinos in Serengeti.
  • Working with TANAPA management to ensure Serengeti National Park rangers are trained and fit to ensure adequate security in the Park.
  • Assisting the park to set up and operate intelligence-gathering mechanisms and use them for effective law enforcement purposes.
  • Ensuring availability and serviceability of key law enforcement equipment and facilities necessary for effective law enforcement in the Park.
  • Spearheading the configuration and use of the digital VHF communication system for effective law enforcement in the rhino range of Serengeti.
  • Ensuring the identification, removal and monitoring of invasive plant species
  • Providing oversight of the garage and ensuring the proper maintenance and management of the FZS and TANAPA fleet of approximately 50 vehicles. 
  • Ensuring that all projects activities fall within the guidelines of the SENAPA GMP and the park regulations.
  • Preparing and submitting required financial and technical reports in a timely manner.
  • Preparing budgets in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and submitting them to Programme Manager in a timely manner.
Fundraising Responsibilities:

  • Raise third party funds in support of project objectives
  • Support the Africa Director in top donor liaison, assist with facilitation and logistics of guests to ARO
Presentation, networking and co-operation Responsibilities:

  • Network with relevant partners and stakeholders
  • Undertake activities to help strengthen FZS visibility in Serengeti
  • Undertake activities to help strengthen networking, cooperation and learning processes between FZS projects
  • Develop co-operations with scientific institutions for conservation purposes 
Terms
A fixed-term salaried position of 30-35,000 Euros per annum (tax free) will be offered, based on qualifications and experience. The position will be based in the Serengeti National Park with occasional travel to other areas within Africa as needed.
