We are seeking to appoint Lecturer in Epidemiology and Applied Biostatistics.

The successful applicant will have a post-graduate degree level qualification or strong proven practical experience in health economics, health service research, epidemiology or related discipline; extensive expertise in epidemiological practical and statistical analyses; experience in study design, field work and statistical techniques in research and collaborative research involving clinical trials, epidemiology or laboratory outcomes; proven experience of teaching at post-graduate level; and, experience in strategic planning, organisation and development of post-graduate degree courses. The post is envisaged as a role for an academic, involved in both teaching and research.  The post requires someone with extensive expertise as an Epidemiologist or Applied Statistician, who can communicate with students, researchers and investigators in order to develop capacity; and identify new scientists who can be part of a long term collaboration.

This is a 30% part-time position to be based overseas at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University (KCMU) College in Moshi, Tanzania. The post holder will be required to build capacity in Epidemiology and/or Statistics at KCMU College by developing and organising teaching within the Masters programme; supervising and advising PhD students to ensure they are able to apply correct study design, field work and statistical techniques in their research and analysis; mentoring the researchers, data managers, and other study personnel in the research projects to ensure they develop their skills and expertise; and contributing to the building of a collaborative School of Public Health within KCMU College. The post holder is also required to contribute to the LSHTM’s teaching programme at Faculty and Department level, up to 15% of his/her time per annum; and, to draft and present scientific papers develop and write new research proposals in conjunction with researchers in LSHTM and KCMU College.

The post is funded by the LSHTM administered component of the Wellcome Trust’s “Training Health Researchers into Vocational Excellence” (THRiVE) Programme. THRiVE is a collaborative capacity building programme involving seven universities in East Africa and two in the UK. The salary is placed on the Academic Pathway Grade 7/Lecturer scale from £41,627 to £47,652 per annum (pro-rata for part-time staff). The post is available from 1st January 2013 and will end on 31st August 2014 (20 months initially), with the possibility for further extension, depending on successful grants applications.
