The Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Mr Saidi Meck Sadiki, has directed municipal councils to remove people conducting business on sidewalks to ease traffic congestion.
Addressing the regional road board in the city, Mr Sadiki said many
petty traders were using road reserves to conduct businesses hence
forcing pedestrians to use the major roads.
“We should ensure that those doing so are made to stop as soon as
possible so that pedestrians would not be forced to use the same roads
with vehicles,” said Mr Sadiki who is also the regional road board
chairman.
He also directed the municipal councils which are Ilala, Temeke and
Kinondoni, to ensure that truck drivers who park on sidewalks and road
reserves stop immediately, saying that by-laws should be used to control
the problems.
Mr Sadiki also recommended that municipal councils should start
procurement process earlier to speed up road projects to meet deadlines,
saying if the councils do not use at least 75 per cent of the budget
for earmarked projects until the end of the financial year would mean
failure.
He hailed Kinondoni municipality for earmarking 50 per cent of its
earnings in improving infrastructure and that other municipalities
should emulate the municipal council.
Kawe Member of Parliament (MP), Ms Halima Mdee, also a board member,
advised the board to communicate with Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA)
in order to get information on turnover of the companies investing in
the city to facilitate their budgets.
The road board meeting was convened to debate on the progress of road
projects in the first quarter of the financial year and that board
members are expected to recommend on how to speed up road construction.
