The Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Race is just around the corner with selected goats already being put in their training camps which expects attracts thousands of fans who would raise billions of shillings for Tanzania community charities.

Organizers of the annual event, which also attracts hordes of spectators, announced on Monday this week that the preparations were in place and that the best prizes will be offer.

“Now all we need is the crowds who will come to join in the fun and help us move closer to raising a target billion TZS for local organizations and charities,” Committee chair Karen Stanley said.

“To this end, we will have a fabulous food area with lots of different dishes from the best outlets in Dar including Rose Garden, Arca di Noe, Black Tomato and QBar.

“We will also have a revamped Kids’ Area that promises to keep all the little ones happy. There is a new Toddlers’ Corner run by Never, Neverland Playgroup and entertainment for the older children from acrobats, drummers, dancers, clowns of the Kigamboni Community Centre.”

The annual family fun day will take place on June 1 this year, at The Green on Keyatta Drive, from 12pm to 5.30pm. Tickets cost 5,000 Tanzanian Shillings for all ages and will be on sale at the gate.

This year is the 13th Dar Charity Goat Races. Since it was first launched in 2001, the event has raised more than 660m Tanzanian Shillings for more than 60 small Tanzanian charities and organizations.

Last year the event raised a record 115m Tanzanian Shillings for 15 organizations, with a record number of 4,200 people coming through the gates.

Mrs Stanley said: “This year we are hoping to do even better. We are very happy to have the support of a fabulous range of sponsors, who are the backbone of the event. Without them it just would not happen.

In particular, we have to thank our race sponsors Southern Sun, Coca-Cola, Tanzanian Breweries Limited, Mantra Tanzania, Erolink, FNB and Symbion, she added

“But of course without the people who come from across Dar, locals and expats alike, to witness the extraordinary sight of goats racing around a track it would all be meaningless. So come one, come all, put the date in your diaries and join in the fun!”

The raffle prizes this year include a SWISS business class return flight to Europe, a Selous Great Water Lodge safari package and a free year’s UhuruOne internet connection, including installation and equipment.

This year’s theme, sea creatures and sailors, may provide inspiration to the many who like to enter the stiff competition for the best fancy dress, with more great prizes for the best dressed group, couple and hat. There is also a special children’s fancy dress parade, with prizes for the best costumes.

Mrs Stanley said: “Whether you come as a mermaid or a mariner, or just as you are, we can’t wait to unveil the spectacle we are putting on for you this year.”
