Safari lager beer wins top Africa awards  


It has become the first Tanzanian brand to received recognition 

Compete with over 50 beers brand in Africa

The 14th Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) African Convention was held in Ghana from 4th to 7th March this year, the convention offered up something a little different and the Gala Dinner was centered around a boxing ring, where talented Ghanaian amateur boxers entertained the convention delegates in three fiercely contested bouts!  


The culmination of the Gala Evening was the presentation of the 1st IBD African Beer Awards. The first awards for beers brewed SOLELY in Africa and surely the first time beer awards have been presented from a boxing ring!?


Over 50 beers were entered from a good representation of breweries across the continent – a very creditable response for these 1st Awards which saw for the first time Safari Lager, a Tanzania’s leading beer brand, clinched the Grand Champion prize at the inaugural African beer awards.


27 Judges, drawn mainly from Europe and Australasia, gave up their time to impartially and individually assess these beers to determine the best that Africa has to offer and one of it was safari lager!


SAB-Miller Africa brands received 10 out of 13 awards presented at the event including award, Safari Lager Brand Manager Mr Oscar Shelukindo told reporters in a news conference that Safari Lager competed with over 50 beer brands and managed to emerge the overall winner.


“In Tanzania Safari lager is well known for its consistent high quality taste, however, to be awarded the grand champion award in a competition against all other African beers is icon,” he said.


Following the historic victory from Safari Lager brand the Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) management decided to tabled the cup at the National Assembly in Dodoma because they believes that Members of Parliament (MPs) are the people’s representatives.


According to Mr Shelukindo that the victory that the brand achieved is the country’s victory due to the fact that Safari lager brand represent the truly color and origin of Tanzanians.


“One of the brand long satisfied customers are the MPs from the Tanzanian national assembly who from one way or another have played an important role in promoting the safari lager across the country,’ he added

Furthermore, the management and secretariat team of the TBL from the headquarters managed to paid a visit to Moshi, Arusha, Mwanza, Mbeya, Iringa, Lindi, Mtwara and Dar es Salaam regions as part of the brand efforts to thanks residents of these cities for their brilliant support that help them to emerge winner.


“I would like to take this opportunity to request the government of Tanzania to set aside a chunk of land for the company to cultivate agricultural crops because the brand is a source of employment and an engine for economic growth in the country,” he lamented.


After the request from Safari Brand Manager Mr Shelukindo to the Speaker of the National Assembly Anna Makinda, the speaker agreed to take into considerations their request to ensure the company’s acquire the land for the cultivation of sorghum.


Not only that but also the TBL company has come up with the new product in the country after launching the program of empowering entrepreneurs by giving them loan of Tsh 2m as a capital after their were successful submit their Business Write-ups.   


The company is not dwell only on brewing, distilling and business in general but it has also engaged in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by helping and assisting communities’ development agendas such as constructions water wells, education support and other community related services.


Mr Shelukindo emphasized to Tanzanians to have the character of admiring and supporting local made products as part of the efforts to foster social and economic development of the country.


During their presence in Mbeya, the TBL team managed to meet Mbeya Regional Commissioner Abbas Kandoro who lauded TBL through Safari Lager Beer brand after winning the Best African Breweries.

Kandoro shed those qualities when he received the winning trophy which shown specific to residents of Mbeya, at a ceremony held in Kabwe Parks Mwanjelwa recently.


It is a great comfort to Tanzanians from Safari Lager beer which won the award and succeeds in overcoming all African beer quality.


 "We are glad to see that you brought a Cup due to the quality of your beer, this is fantastic to Tanzanians and I believe this victory will encourage people to love your products.


 "Success Awards won Best African Breweries is not something small, it is comforting to all of us and now we can be proud of what belongs to us," said Kandoro.


 The ceremony signaled the Mbeya residents Cup coincided with entertainment of all kinds, which were produced by several musical groups.


The brand also won first place in the above five per cent ABV category serves to highlight their commitment to brewing excellence.
